Mile #58: Mitch and Ann Young

Mile #58: Mitch and Ann Young
Another amazing contribution from the Young family!  Mitch and Ann are my stepmom's amazing parents.  I love them to death and I am so happy to have their support on this mission.  I feel especially lucky since I've heard that I will becoming an Ironman on the same day as Ann's birthday :-)  Sounds like a great excuse to eat lots of cake!

They've chosen mile #58 to represent the year they got married!  1958...That's 53 years of marriage!!!  What an inspiration!

Thank you Mitch and Ann for all of your love, prayers, great food and family!  You're amazing!

Mile #92: Ribbons to Remember Mile

Mile #92: Ribbons to Remember Mile
This is a pretty incredible addition to the mile list because it comes from another organization dedicated to fighting ovarian cancer and raising awareness to this disease.  This is incredible to me because I haven't met a single person from this group, but they stepped out to support this effort in a great way.

Please check out their website here www.ribbonstoremember.org and check them out on Facebook.  Let them know team Miles for Mitzie says 'hello'!!

This mile is in honor of a special lady whose story you can read about here.  Mile #92 represents her birthdate.  Her story is just one more reason why fighting this silent killer is so important.  Similar to my mom, her cancer was basically discovered by accident.  The symptoms were so vague they were easily overlooked.

Please keep the ovarian cancer symptoms in mind; Persistent bloating, abdominal pain, indigestion, urinary troubles, and abnormal weight loss/gain.  Call your doctor if they persist for more than a few weeks and be persistent in finding your answers.  A pap smear does NOT detect ovarian cancer.  Tests that can help are a transvaginal ultrasound and getting a CA125 blood test.

Thank you Ribbons to Remember for all that you do....and THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for supporting my effort!  We'll stop this disease one day!!

Mile #4: Sarah & Cliff Brown "BRAS Mile"

Mile #4: BRAS Mile
I bet you're wondering what BRAS stands for....I'll let my little sister, best friend, and super duper amazing little light in my eye, and inspiration to my heart explain this mile to you:

"This mile is for Blake, Skylar, Riley and Adalyn!  These 4 special little blessings are Mitzie's (aka Mom's) grandchildren.  I strongly believe she danced in Heaven the day each of them were born!  Mom fought the 4 year fight she did for her children and their children the "BRAS."   If it weren't for Mom's unending love and her will to fight, these perfect little stars would not be here today!  These little angels are reminders to me how amazing of a Mom, Mitzie was.

"BRAS" Mile is also a reminder of why we donate and fight against Ovarian Cancer... For Mom's little grand-girls!

Geaux BRAS Mile!!! "

'Nuff said, Sarah!  Simply, thank you!

Mile #8: Robin Mazeikas & Mile #88: Dan and Cheryl Young

These two miles have more in common than the number 8. I think it's a cute coincidence that they were also both sponsored in celebration of a wedding/anniversary.  And, as far as I know, the donors did not plan this.

Mile #8: Robin Mazeikas
This mile belongs to my amazing mother-in-law and she claimed it in honor of me and the hubster's 8th anniversary.  Yes, that's right, I actually think - no wait, KNOW - that my mother-in-law is amazing.  I always say I'm lucky to have married an only child because we don't have to share her with anyone else, but really I'm just plain lucky to have married into Kyle's family!

Robin is the sweetest, most humble, and GIVING mother-in-law on the planet.  She has never had a mean thing to say about anyone and did I mention how giving she is yet??  She'll do anything to see and spend time with her grandkids (and kids) and she should be given an award for the way that she spoils them rotten (and I mean totally rotten!).  Of course, I can't complain about the way she's made sure to spoil her son and I rotten in the process. Yes, I do think we're spoiled by her, but I can live with that :-)

Thank you so much Robin for all the great love and support...and for Mile #8!!!

Mile #88: Dan & Cheryl Young, the "All You Need is Love" mile
Dan & Cheryl are my step-mom's brother and sister-in-law.  They've purchased mile #88 in honor of the year that they got married (1988).  Everybody say 'awwwww'!  I just love that!

The Young family has always been such sweet and loving additions to my life.  They've welcomed us into their homes and lives, unconditionally and have always made us feel loved.  What a blessing they are!  Dan & Cheryl live here in The Woodlands and I'll ride my bike right near their house on race day. And they're right...all we really do need is love!

Love,
Lauri

Swim Sponsor: The Ward Family

Swim Event (Mile #1 - Mile #2.4)

Yes, I know Mile #1 has been claimed...But you see, my AWESOME Aunt Jackie  let me know today that she wants to sponsor my ENTIRE swim portion!!!  How could I tell her 'no'??  I know, right!  So I made an executive decision to give the entier swim to my aunt for her donation, and I just hoped Christie wouldn't mind co-sponsoring Mile #1 with the Ward family...right Christie?? :-)

My mom has one brother and three sisters. Jackie is one part of the youngest twin sisters.  Jackie and her family live in Huntsville, TX and have always been an amazing part of the wonderful support system that is the Akins family.  Really, I can't say enough about them.  The Ward family is such a fun, giving, caring, joyful, inspiring, and an uplifting group to be around - all of them!!  I just love them to pieces and wish we could see them more and more!

So a special thank you to my aunt and uncle, Jackie and David, their daughters and my cousins Scottie and Madison.  My swim wouldn't be the same without your help!  Love you more!!

Mile #110: The Autism Awareness Mile

A VERY special thanks to our first corporate mile sponsor, BRITE Success, LLC!!!  This amazing business stepped up in the name of autism awareness and, in turn, gets to show off their support for ovarian cancer awareness.

BRITE Success selected Mile #110 because it is estimated that nearly 1 in every 110 children are diagnosed with some form of autism.  According to the BRITE Success website that is more than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined!  That statistic is mind-boggling to me.

At BRITE Success they help families and professionals learn how to prepare these special children for success in education and life.  Please visit their website and learn more about their amazing business.  I'm so glad they were able to join me on my Ironman journey and hopefully help their cause as well!

Mile #131: Michelle Arango "The QUOTEal Mile"

Mile #131:

Woo hooo!!!  Another mile has been claimed thanks to my amazing friend Michelle Arango!!  I met Michelle in my sorority house at LSU.  Funny enough, the same night that we were introduced we also decided to become roommates, which worked out great for me because Michelle had enough points to get us one of the best rooms in the sorority house!  Score!!

I can honestly credit Michelle with my amazing abs.  She is one of those friends that I can ALWAYS find something to not just giggle at, but to laugh so hard that I need to hold on to things to keep me from falling on the floor in hysterical convulsions.  Yes, she is that funny...and we are just that darn funny together (at least WE think so).

So why 'The QUOTEal Mile"??  Well, besides the fact that Michelle says everyone will be able to read the 'New Orleans in her' through the way she combined the words QUOTE and TEAL together, I believe it also has something to do with a little tradition she and I have carried through our years as friends together.  'The quote wall', as we like to call it, is our little homage to just how witty we think we are.  You see, in the midst or our uncontrollable fits of laughter we find genius!!  And genius must be written down and posted to a wall in honor, recognition, and just for another good laugh any time you need it!  I know - at this point you are all jealous of our ingenuity and the amazing friendship that spawned this sort of classic material.  You should be! :-)

Why mile #131?  Michelle says she just wanted to give me something to laugh at while on the run and because we will both be 31 at the time that this insanity takes place.  Love it!

Thanks Michelle for the laughter and all of the amazing support you have given me along the way!!  Mile #131 "The QUOTEal Mile" will be awesome!!

Introducing: A Logo!!!

Yes, I'm just a weee bit excited about the image we can now proudly attach to our name.  Why not, though?  It looks awesome!!

But, you also need to know how I was so blessed to run across the amazing artist behind this creation.

Nancy Parsons is a wonderful friend of a wonderful friend of mine, Meredith Sharp.  When Meredith found out I was looking to create a logo she hopped on it and sent Nancy an e-mail to see if she could help me out.  Not only was Nancy willing to help me out, but she was willig to donate her skills and talent to our little organization.  That's right!! Nancy did this amazing work all pro-bono!

The reason, Nancy recently lost a good friend to ovarian cancer and her message to me was "This is my way of honoring my friend and paying it forward."  Thank you so much Nancy!  I hope I can do this right for you, your friend, and all of us who have lost someone to ovarian cancer.

Please, my friends and family - help me spread the word about this disease.  Come be a part of my fight against this disease.  Follow Nancy's amazing example and 'pay it forward' in any way you can.  Use your talents and gifts to make a difference in another woman's life.  Or, make a little room in your budget or on your wish lists and make a donation to my cause by pressing the purple and gold link above.  Put one of my Ironman mile numbers on your wishlist and ask your friends and family to help you fight ovarian cancer!

Thanks again to the amazing Nancy Parsons for my beautiful logo!  I love it!!
